Our intake and veterinary care policy

At Land of Illinois Parrot Rescue, our mission is to provide a safe haven for parrots in need. It's crucial to understand that we operate strictly as a rescue organization, dedicated to rehoming birds. We are not a veterinary clinic. Our commitment to each bird begins with formal surrender, ensuring we can provide comprehensive care and secure their future.

While we do accept injured birds, intake is limited strictly to birds that are formally surrendered to the rescue through completed and signed surrender paperwork. Once a bird is surrendered, Land of Illinois Parrot Rescue assumes responsibility for arranging veterinary evaluation and care as deemed necessary.

For legal and liability reasons, we do not have the authority to take a privately owned bird to a veterinarian and then return that bird to the original owner. We cannot transport, authorize treatment for, or assume responsibility for a bird unless ownership has been legally transferred to the rescue through surrender documentation.

This policy is in place to protect:

  • The bird’s welfare
  • The original owner
  • Our rescue, volunteers, and veterinary partners

We strongly encourage bird owners seeking medical care without surrender to contact a licensed avian veterinarian directly. We appreciate your understanding and respect for these necessary policies, which allow us to continue providing responsible and ethical rescue services. Land of Illinois Parrot Rescue

What is Land of Illinois Parrot Rescue's intake policy?

Land of Illinois Parrot Rescue is a rescue-only organization. We do not operate as a veterinary clinic or temporary holding service. Intake is strictly limited to birds formally surrendered through completed and signed paperwork. Once surrendered, we assume full responsibility for veterinary evaluation and care.

Why is formal surrender necessary for my bird to receive care through the rescue?

This policy is in place to protect the bird's welfare, the original owner, and our rescue, volunteers, and veterinary partners. It ensures clear legal ownership and responsibility, allowing us to provide ethical and responsible rescue services.

What if my bird is sick or injured?

We do accept injured birds, but they must be formally surrendered to the rescue. Once surrendered, we will arrange for immediate veterinary attention and all necessary medical care. We cannot provide medical care for privately owned birds.

Can I bring my privately owned bird for medical care without surrendering it?

No. For legal and liability reasons, we cannot transport, authorize treatment for, or assume responsibility for a bird unless ownership has been legally transferred to the rescue through surrender documentation. We strongly encourage private bird owners to contact a licensed avian veterinarian directly for medical care.

What kind of veterinary care do surrendered parrots receive?

Once formally surrendered to Land of Illinois Parrot Rescue, each bird receives a comprehensive veterinary evaluation. We then arrange and cover the costs for necessary medical treatments, rehabilitation, and ongoing health management as deemed appropriate by our avian veterinarians to ensure their well-being and prepare them for adoption.

How do I formally surrender a parrot to Land of Illinois Parrot Rescue?

To formally surrender a parrot, you will need to complete and sign our surrender paperwork. This legally transfers ownership to the rescue. Please contact us to start the surrender process and discuss the necessary documentation.
